I Guess It’s Healthy Eating Day On Righty Blog

By Righty

If the kids buy into this, that’s saying a lot for moms like me who made sure their kids had balanced lunches and dinners while they were growing up and tried to teach them to make healthy choices, even though you didn’t keep them from eating junk fun foods, also.

Will your babies choose the bag of crunchy chips or this alternative?

Thirst For Answers

By Righty

I’d be better off  living on just bread and water…period.

The article implies consuming water before eating a meal will lead to weight loss.   Women and men in a study group of 12 weeks had their daily calorie intake reduced to 1,200 and 1,500, respectively, from up to 2,200 prior to the study.  Those drinking water before a meal did lose more weight than those allowed to drink whatever they wanted.

from the Economist -

Why this works is obscure. But work it does. It’s cheap. It’s simple. And unlike so much dietary advice, it seems to be enjoyable too.

I don’t know about you, but if I reduce my calorie intake but continue to allow myself to eat the type of meals the child has in the photo accompanying the article, even though I’m drinking water – I’m not sure how much weight I’m going to lose.

Rip Van Winkle Was Asleep For 20 Years

By Righty

Sounds familiar…

25 years ago an outbreak of illegal pesticide poisoning from contaminated melons sickened 2000 people and finally the insecticide is banned.  Yawn…was anyone snoring?

from Environmental Health News -

Twenty-five years after the worst known outbreak of pesticide poisoning in U.S. history, an agreement is announced that phases out all uses of aldicarb. Manufacturer Bayer CropScience agreed to stop producing the highly toxic insecticide, used to kill pests on cotton and several food crops, by 2015 in all world markets. Use on citrus and potatoes will be prohibited after next year. New EPA documents show that babies and children under 5 can ingest levels of the insecticide through food and drinking water that exceed limits that the agency considers safe. “Aldicarb no longer meets our rigorous food safety standards and may pose unacceptable dietary risks, especially to infants and young children,” the EPA said. At least 2,000 people fell ill from eating California watermelons illegally contaminated with aldicarb on the Fourth of July in 1985. “It is good the revocation is happening; it is a shame it took 20 years,” said Dick Jackson, chair of environmental health sciences at UCLA, who was a top state health official during the outbreak.

But, But…I Was Still Deciding Whether I Was Going To Get The Vaccine!?

By Righty

I guess that problem is solved.  While I get the regular flu vaccine yearly ( and have begun to wonder whether that is almost a waste of time) I was apprehensive about the H1N1 vaccine.  My daughter, son-in-law and baby grandson did get it with no side effects (that we know of).  This was just one vaccine I did not want to get and I worried about my family.  I believe the vaccine was rushed into the system too quickly.  Now the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates the pandemic was short-lived…

from the Star Tribune -

GENEVA – The World Health Organization declared the swine flu pandemic officially over Tuesday, months after many national authorities started canceling vaccine orders and shutting down telephone hot lines as the disease ebbed from the headlines.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said the organization’s emergency committee of top flu experts advised her that the pandemic had “largely run its course” and the world is no longer in phase six — the highest influenza alert level.

Super Duper Nanny State

By Righty

I don’t know about the statement made by Santos Rios, manager of a Cellular Image outlet off Saratoga Avenue in San Jose , “if cell phones weren’t safe for you, they wouldn’t let us sell them.”  There are plenty of things “they” let people sell that are later found to be unsafe.  But we don’t need everything we do in life watched over by the government.

from MercuryNews.com -

SAN FRANCISCO — From banning plastic shopping bags to making homeowners recycle their banana peels and coffee grinds, San Francisco has often led the way in writing the most — take your choice — cutting-edge or over-the-top laws in the land.

Now the city’s going after killer cell phones.

By becoming the first town in America to require retailers to post radiation-emission information beside every make and model of phone they sell, city supervisors have once again dropped down a rabbit hole of controversial public policy.

Smells Fishy To Me

By Righty

If the fishermen don’t trust it…I wouldn’t eat it.

from AP -

VENICE, La. — Seafood from some parts of the oil-fouled Gulf of Mexico has been declared safe to eat by the government, based in part on human smell tests. But even some Gulf fishermen are questioning whether the fish and shrimp are OK to feed to their own families.

Parents – Remember When You Protected Your Baby’s Skin?

By Righty

You wouldn’t ever have put your baby in danger from the sun, would you?  Yet parents continually allow their teens to go to tanning beds.  For what?  Is that unnatural-looking tan that important?  If you don’t believe what research says about sunbeds and the dangers they pose regarding skin cancers for the future, then at least look at the reality of what natural sun exposure has done to people over the years.  Or ask some farmers, outdoor athletes, landscapers, or relatives or friends who have spent their lives in the south.

As a teen I spent all the time I could on a Florida beach (baking) or in the Florida sun, sometimes for recreation, sometimes for athletics, and as a part of daily life.  Now, after seeing what the unforgiving sun has done to the skin of some of my relatives, I avoid the sun as much as possible.  But I wait and wonder if I will pay a price for those years in the sun in the near future.

from the Daily Mail -

Teenagers who use sunbeds are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with the most dangerous form of skin cancer as those who have never been to a tanning salon, a study has found.

The research reveals that the earlier sunbed use begins, the greater the risk of developing a deadly melanoma before the age of 40.

It shows that those who start before they turn 20 are 88 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with a deadly melanoma than people who have never used a sunbed.

Summer Fairs and Festivals…No Counting

By Righty

Summer fair and festival time is in full swing.  I don’t know about you, but when I go to a fair or festival I don’t count my calories…

Wisconsin State Fair Cream Puff

Yes, I like cream puffs, cheese curds, baked potatoes, elephant ears, and lemonade just to name a few…but I’ll share with my family so I can taste many more favorites.

There’s fudge, maple sugar, salt water taffy, and that’s not counting any main course items.  Oooh, I don’t feel so good…there’s always next year to try something else!

If you are a calorie counter…maybe you’d like to take the quiz to see

Which festival food has more calories

If you do count your calories…maybe you will be found at one place I won’t  – getting your weight guessed near the big scale.

What’s In That Milk?

By Righty

My uncle, my dad, and my oldest brother…prostate cancer.

Well, at least I don’t have to worry about that.  But I’ll continue to avoid milk (even though my doctor objects).  I think it has something to do with all of those years I spent drinking milk straight off of a farm – milk we poured into our own bottles that had thick cream floating on top. I’ve had enough milk.  But did my dad and brother have too much?  How about telling us what we can consume?

from the Daily Mail -

Milk is often described as nature’s most wholesome food.

It contains no additives, artificial colourings or preservatives – and is packed with vitamins and minerals.

It provides a unique blend of protein, magnesium, potassium and B-vitamins, not to mention the calcium required for bones

But is it really the elixir we believe it to be?

Some experts believe that, in some
