Unauthorized x Forty-Eight

By Righty

You like potato and I like potahto, You like tomato and I like tomahto
Potato, potahto, Tomato, tomahto, Let’s call the whole thing off

Unauthorized.”

Sorry, I just can’t…they are illegal immigrants

A locked refrigerated truck was found to be holding 48 illegal immigrants at a Laredo Customs and Border checkpoint.  Well, thank goodness for the dog at the checkpoint that was able to detect the illegals crammed in the trailer.  If not, who knows if they would be alive.  The driver, 72 year-old Wayne West, at first denied knowing what cargo he was carrying.  Hmpf…

from San Antiono Express-News -

The trailer was refrigerated, according to Russell Jordan, West’s attorney, and all those in the trailer declined medical treatment, immigration officials said. They were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

[...]

The immigrants were from Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador, said Nina Pruneda, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

So, The Teen Didn’t Mean To Get Shocked & Burst Into Flames

By Righty

Of course he didn’t.  That wasn’t his intention.  There’s no way he knew the copper cable he was trying to steal was live with 11,000 volts.  He had some intelligence, didn’t he?  Some?

from the Daily Mail -

The 18-year-old was found on fire in disused premises in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, as a group of youths tried to remove the cabling.

He suffered extensive burns to his arms and head which were initially described as life-threatening.

As[s]bestos

By Righty

No one may ever know how many children or adults will suffer effects from asbestos or lead poisoning due the fact that New York building and construction safety inspector, Saverio F. Todaro, 68, said he did the inspections and tests, and filled out reports indicating everything was safe, when in all actuality he DID NOT.  Not one single test.  Most likely, Todaro is not alone…

from the New York Times -

A safety inspector licensed to make critical assessments of asbestos and lead risks in buildings and at construction sites across the city made a stunning admission in federal court: Despite filing hundreds of reports saying his tests had found no danger, he had not performed a single one of the tests.

[...]

The number of potential victims of Mr. Todaro’s fraud, which spanned at least a decade, loomed so large that the Manhattan United States attorney’s office, which is prosecuting the case, created a separate Web page to comply with a law requiring it to notify victims.

The Show Must Go On…

By Righty

I received this video in an forwarded email.  There were comments such as “Now I’ve seen everything!”

On YouTube it’s “Amazing…you won’t believe it”

I’m no animal rights activist, and I know mountain goats like to climb, but I don’t find this entertaining or amusing.  I just feel pity for the goat.  I suppose I wonder how many goats have fallen and broken their legs so they can do this stunt.

Inhaling Coffee Is Just Not Right

By Righty

I know, I know…people are in a hurry.  There’s just no time.  There’s not even time to grab that cup of coffee in the morning anymore.  So what’s a busy (and trendy) person to do?

Grab Le Whif and inhale your caffeine.

It used to be so wonderful to breathe that aroma of coffee, but now you can just breathe your entire cup – comes in regular, chocolate coffee.  You can also inhale chocolate, raspberry chocolate, and mint chocolate, too. All without calories!

Kind of creepy…developed by David Edwards, a Harvard University biomedical engineer who worked on inhalable vaccines.  Comes in 3-packs for under $8

It’s coffee, not cough-ee. If you have asthma and need to take in your coffee this way, well okay then.

This Is Not The Type Of Hope Haiti Needs

By Righty

We’ve been told to “Look for the union label.”

We’re hounded to “Buy American.”

We need to save our American jobs.  We need to take care of our own.  And why not?  But Americans are caring people.  When others are in need we are always there to help monetarily or physically, when able.

Who wasn’t isn’t aware that Haiti is one of the poorest of third world countries.  After the earthquake you have to wonder if they will ever recover to a minute image of what they were?  The people of Haiti had nothing.  They’ll still have nothing.  And while the fortunate among them have jobs in the garmet industy, with a tremendous amount of work for a pathetic amount of money, which barely allows them to survive  - we stand by and support this.

The current alternative is worse – no work.

There’s just something gut-wrenching to think on one hand a retailer is collecting $550 for an article of clothing, while on the other hand the person who made it is practically starving and earning $3.09 a week.  And this is called “Hope II?”

from Times Daily -

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Jordanie Pinquie Rebeca leans forward and guides a piece of suit-jacket wool and its silky lining into a sewing machine, where – bat! bat! bat! – they’re bound together to be hemmed.

If she does this for eight hours, she will earn $3.09. Her boss will ship the pinstriped suit she helped make to the United States, tariff-free. There a shopper will buy it from JoS. A. Bank Clothiers for $550.

In the quest to rebuild Haiti, the international community and business leaders are dusting off a pre-quake plan to expand its low-wage garment assembly industry as a linchpin of recovery. President Barack Obama’s administration is on board, encouraging U.S. retailers to obtain from Haiti at least 1 percent of the clothes they sell.

But will that save a reeling country whose economy must be built from scratch?

Stop And Think – You Can’t Get H1N1 Protection On The Web

By Righty

Seriously – It’s a government controlled vaccine, and there are actually scammers out there trying to make a buck.  Trouble is, there are gullible people who are afraid and they are falling for it.

There are products for sale – everything from pseudo vaccine to shampoo to prevent the flu.

from the Courier-Journal -

Since last spring, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has sent at least 80 warning letters to more than 85 Web sites, regarding more than 145 products, said Alyson Saben, who leads the FDA’s H1N1 consumer protection team.

[...]

The FDA’s database of fraudulent H1N1 products includes a wide variety of items from shampoo, skin-care aids and silver-containing spray to dietary supplements, herbal tea and a detox drink. There’s even a two-pack of purported H1N1 vaccine for $220.

No legitimate vaccine “is available directly to the public from any online source,” McKinney said. “Anything marketed like that is not legitimate and should be strictly avoided.”

Happiness Is Having Physicians Support Your Product

By Righty

How do you get more moms and dads to believe a sugary beverage is okay for their child, or even them to drink?  Could you buddy up with physicians?  Maybe.

Coca-Cola Co. has the slogan “Open happiness,” but they may have opened a can of worms since 20 Contra Costa County, Californa physicians resigned from the American Academy of Family Physicians after their professional association and the Coca-cola Co. formed a partnership.

from the Contra Costa Times -

“I am appalled and ashamed of this partnership between Coca-Cola and the American Academy of Family Physicians,” said Dr. William Walker, director of health services for the county.

“How can any organization that claims to promote public health join forces with a company that promotes products that put our children at risk for obesity, heart disease and early death?”

Walker made the comments in front of Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, shortly before he ripped up his academy card. He had been a member for 25 years.

Katrina Was Caused By What? You Guessed It…

By Righty

Global warming, of course, brought on by local power companies.  So says the Fifth Circuit Court in New Orleans.  Hope the lawyers don’t delve too much further into where the co2 emissions came from regarding that global warming in N’Orleans.  There was a lot of spicy food being cooked in that area.

from the Wall Street Journal – Law Blog

The suit was brought by landowners in Mississippi, who claim that oil and coal companies emitted greenhouse gasses that contributed to global warming that, in turn, caused a rise in sea levels, adding to Hurricane Katrina’s ferocity.

[...]

In so holding, the court notably quoted a recent Supreme Court opinion that “accepted as plausible the link between man-made greenhouse gas emissions and global warming” along with the fact that “rising ocean temperatures may contribute to the ferocity of hurricanes.”

Trading Secrets

By Righty

I don’t know what possesses U.S. citizens to become traitors.  What would make a citizen so desperate to give secrets away to another country?  Money?  Is money that important?  It must be an awful lot of money. Is it enough to lead to some grand life?  I just can’t imagine.

$2,000?  $9,000?  There must be much more to this story.

from USA Today -

A Maryland scientist who has worked for the Pentagon, NASA and a nuclear weapons lab was arrested today for allegedly trying to deliver secret data about military, intelligence and satellite operations to someone he thought was an Israeli agent.

[...]

Sept. 10: Undercover FBI agents left a letter in the designated post office box, asking Nozette to answer a list of questions about U.S. satellite information. The agents provided a $2,000 cash payment. Serial numbers of the bills were recorded.
