I Guess It’s Healthy Eating Day On Righty Blog

By Righty

If the kids buy into this, that’s saying a lot for moms like me who made sure their kids had balanced lunches and dinners while they were growing up and tried to teach them to make healthy choices, even though you didn’t keep them from eating junk fun foods, also.

Will your babies choose the bag of crunchy chips or this alternative?

I Can’t Tell You…

By Righty

…how many times this summer “global warming” has ruined some of my favorite candy bars.

It looks like there is hope for fighting global warming!

Thank you, Kraft!

Smells Fishy To Me

By Righty

If the fishermen don’t trust it…I wouldn’t eat it.

from AP -

VENICE, La. — Seafood from some parts of the oil-fouled Gulf of Mexico has been declared safe to eat by the government, based in part on human smell tests. But even some Gulf fishermen are questioning whether the fish and shrimp are OK to feed to their own families.

Summer Fairs and Festivals…No Counting

By Righty

Summer fair and festival time is in full swing.  I don’t know about you, but when I go to a fair or festival I don’t count my calories…

Wisconsin State Fair Cream Puff

Yes, I like cream puffs, cheese curds, baked potatoes, elephant ears, and lemonade just to name a few…but I’ll share with my family so I can taste many more favorites.

There’s fudge, maple sugar, salt water taffy, and that’s not counting any main course items.  Oooh, I don’t feel so good…there’s always next year to try something else!

If you are a calorie counter…maybe you’d like to take the quiz to see

Which festival food has more calories

If you do count your calories…maybe you will be found at one place I won’t  – getting your weight guessed near the big scale.

What’s In That Milk?

By Righty

My uncle, my dad, and my oldest brother…prostate cancer.

Well, at least I don’t have to worry about that.  But I’ll continue to avoid milk (even though my doctor objects).  I think it has something to do with all of those years I spent drinking milk straight off of a farm – milk we poured into our own bottles that had thick cream floating on top. I’ve had enough milk.  But did my dad and brother have too much?  How about telling us what we can consume?

from the Daily Mail -

Milk is often described as nature’s most wholesome food.

It contains no additives, artificial colourings or preservatives – and is packed with vitamins and minerals.

It provides a unique blend of protein, magnesium, potassium and B-vitamins, not to mention the calcium required for bones

But is it really the elixir we believe it to be?

Some experts believe that, in some

If It’s Good Enough For Muslims….

By Righty

I don’t care if it’s good enough for Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, or you name the religion (or not)…I know I won’t be partaking in civet coffee.

from Ynet News -

Indonesia’s top Islamic body declared Tuesday that Muslims can drink civet coffee – the world’s most expensive coffee, which is extracted from the dung of civet cats.

A preacher recently suggested the beverage might not be “halal” – or religiously approved – because its unusual provenance makes it unclean. But after a long discussion Tuesday, the influential Indonesian Ulema Council said that the coffee, known locally as Kopi Luwak, could be consumed as long as the beans were washed.

This Story May Get On Your “Nerves”

By Righty

If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to have had a food borne illness from seafood, such as shrimp, you know how unpleasant it can be.  I won’t even go there.

Now I love seafood, especially cold water, east coast seafood.  But I do enjoy pink Gulf shrimp - or should I say did enjoy them.  How can we trust Gulf seafood anymore?  I certainly don’t want to go to that food borne illness place.   But what if it is more that food borne illnesses we have to worry about?

from Aol News -

Petroleum contamination is known to cause cancer and brain damage. But how much oil and gas does it take to make seafood dangerous?

Why He’s The “Boss” In Hoboken

By Righty

It seems people love to watch shows about cake decorating, cake making, and cake bakers competing in cake contests. Do people really eat some of these cakes coated in thick, multi-colored fondant that was manipulated like play dough? It appears they do.

One of the most popular T.V. cake shows?  TLC’s Cake Boss. “TLC: Family, Home, Style, Cooking” brought to you by Discovery.  Is it the cakes or is it the family behind the cakes?

Not your typical cake (or cooking) show, but Carlo’s City Hall Bakery, is not a typical family run business –  headed by Buddy and shared by mother, sisters and brother-in-laws (and assorted other relatives dropping in on occasion) and a clientele like no other.

“TLC: Family, Home, Style, Cooking” bought to you by Discovery.

(language)

from the New Jersey Journal/NJ.com -

As season three of the TLC reality show “Cake Boss” continues, so do the crowds that flock to the 100-year-old bakery in Hoboken.

Today the line stretched down the block, and the bakery ferried out ices (at $3 a pop) to keep the sweating crowd happy.

Flashback: Nov 2009 Obama Admin Considers Banning Raw Oyster Sales During Summer Months In Gulf

By Righty

Luckily for the Gulf oyster industry the FDA was convinced otherwise.

from St. Augustine.com -

The abrupt turnaround came as oyster-lovers and industry officials — as well as Democrats and Republicans across the Gulf — blasted the plan as unnecessary government meddling. Industry officials said it could have killed a $500 million economy and thousands of jobs.

Today, here you see an oyster business and then you don’t

An Ameripure Oyster

One of the most successful oyster businesses in the South processed their last oysters today, the owner tearfully said goodbye to his employees closed the doors and walked away – not knowing if there is a future.

If you are an oyster lover you may have eaten some of their product.   They supplied oysters to restaurants across the U.S.

Ameripure Oysters, Franklin, LA  is no more thanks to the BP oil spill and its aftermath.

There will be no raw oyster sales during the warm summer months in the Gulf…

Something’s Fishy Off Of Long Island

By Righty

Remind me not to do my clamming in New York.  Actually, I don’t do clamming, but my aunt and my brother used to clam in Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.  So remind me not to eat clams from New York.  Or scallops, or lobsters for that matter.

What can I say…I love seafood.  But not from waters like this:

from the Boston Globe -

A fishing boat dredging for clams off New York’s Long Island pulled up 10 canisters, including one that broke open and released an unidentified chemical that caused two crew members to blister and struggle to breathe, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.

[...]

The crew of six caught the canisters in their nets Sunday about 45 miles south of Long Island but dumped them back into the ocean when one crew member began developing blisters. It was several hours after he had been exposed to the contents of the container that had broken open, Coast Guard spokesman Jeff Hall said.
